Managed Database ServicesOutsourced SQL Server & Azure SQL administration, performance tuning, custom development, and 24/7 APM

Most database problems are not infrastructure problems. They are query plans no one has reviewed in two years, indexes that fit yesterday’s workload, backup chains that have never been restore-tested, and integrations bolted on by people who left the company. On-Site Technology runs the databases that run your line-of-business applications: senior SQL Server and Azure SQL DBAs on staff, 200+ KPI Application Performance Monitoring 24/7, custom T-SQL development, and an Azure-native pipeline ready for Power BI and Azure AI Foundry. Delivered remotely across the United States; deepest engineering capacity in Northern NJ, the NYC metro, Pennsylvania, and South Florida.

    AI & Copilot Data Readiness

Your Operational Data, Ready for AI

Microsoft 365 Copilot is only as useful as the data it can ground against. Custom Copilot Studio agents and Azure AI Foundry-built copilots need clean, indexed, governed source data to retrieve from. We make the SQL Server and Azure SQL data behind your line-of-business apps usable as a grounding layer for AI.

    Vector & RAG Storage

Azure AI Foundry vector indexes, embedding pipelines, and retrieval-augmented generation stores built on top of your operational data. Document chunking, semantic search, and index hygiene managed alongside the source-of-truth tables they reference.

    Microsoft 365 Copilot Grounding

Line-of-business SQL data feeding Microsoft 365 Copilot, custom Copilot Studio agents, and Azure AI Foundry-built copilots. We harden the source tables, define the retrieval contracts, and govern what the agents can see.

    Power BI Semantic Layer

Power BI semantic models, dataflows, and dataset governance built on top of well-tuned source tables. Direct query optimization, incremental refresh, and row-level security policies that survive promotion to Copilot in Power BI.

    Azure Data Orchestration

    The OST Database Methodology

A Five-Phase Approach We Run Every Engagement Through

From the first audit through ongoing optimization. The same five phases whether you came in for performance triage, a migration, or a long-term managed program.

    1

    Discovery & Audit

Inventory every database, instance, version, and integration. Capture wait stats, blocking, top-N expensive queries, and current backup posture. End with a written gap report.

    2

    Baseline & Tune

Address the top performance issues first: missing indexes, bad query plans, fragmented statistics, deadlocks, parameter sniffing. Establish the steady-state performance baseline.

    3

    Hardening & Backup

Security baseline, surface-area lockdown, role-based access, audit configuration. Backup chain validated end-to-end with a real restore test, not a checkbox.

    4

    24/7 APM

Application Performance Monitoring goes live with custom thresholds. 200+ KPIs streaming around the clock. The DBA team responds during business hours before users open a ticket.

    5

    Continuous Optimization

Quarterly performance reviews, schema evolution, index strategy refresh, and pipeline tuning as workloads change. The plan keeps pace with the business.

    Compliance & Security

Database Controls Mapped to the Frameworks You Are Audited Against

Encryption at rest and in transit, audit logging, role-based access, separation of duties, change control, backup integrity. We document what is in place and where the gaps are, mapped to the frameworks your auditors and insurers actually read.

    HIPAA Security Rule

Database encryption, audit logs, access controls aligned to 45 CFR §164.312.

    PCI DSS 4.0

Cardholder data encryption, key management, and access logging on payment-adjacent databases.

    SOC 2 (CC6, CC7)

Logical access, change management, and monitoring evidence for trust-services criteria audits.

    GDPR

Data subject rights, retention controls, and pseudonymization for EU personal data in your databases.

    NIST 800-53

AC, AU, CP, IA, and SC control families implemented at the database tier for federal-aligned programs.

    ISO 27001

Annex A.8 (asset management), A.12 (operations), and A.18 controls evidenced at the database layer.

    GLBA Safeguards

Customer financial data protections under the FTC Safeguards Rule for non-bank financial institutions.

    CMMC 2.0 Level 2

Defense industrial base data protections; SC, AU, CP control families inside CUI-bearing databases.

    Why On-Site Technology

A Database Team, Not a Database Hosting Bill

Most managed database options today are either hosted infrastructure (DBaaS) or project-based consultants who leave when the engagement ends. We are neither. We run your databases, develop against them, and stay on the line when production breaks.

    Senior DBAs On Staff

Every account works with senior Microsoft SQL specialists who do this for a living, not generalists who happen to know SQL.

    200-KPI APM 24/7

Application Performance Monitoring tracks more than 200 KPIs per database around the clock. We see issues before tickets are opened.

    Integrated Microsoft Stack

SQL Server, Azure SQL, M365 Copilot, Azure AI Foundry, Power BI, Azure Data Factory, and the security stack all under one roof.

    25 Years Running Databases

On-Site Technology has been running mid-market databases since 2001. The patterns we use are battle-tested across thousands of production incidents.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Managed Database Services: FAQs

The questions IT directors, CTOs, and application owners ask us most often before scoping a database engagement.

What is the difference between managed database services and DBaaS like Azure SQL Managed Instance?

Database-as-a-Service (Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure SQL Database, AWS RDS) handles the underlying infrastructure: the OS, the SQL engine patches, the storage, the high availability mechanics. It does not handle your indexes, your query plans, your stored procedures, your schema design, your backup-restore strategy, or your security baseline. Managed database services from On-Site Technology cover that second layer. Most clients use both: Azure SQL Managed Instance as the platform, OST as the DBA team that runs it.

Do you support both SQL Server administration and custom database development?

Yes. The same senior team handles production administration (patching, performance, backup, security) and development work (T-SQL stored procedures, views, functions, triggers, schema design, ETL). Most clients value this because the DBAs who know how the database actually runs are the same ones building the next stored procedure or index. There is no handoff and no second vendor learning curve.

What is included in 24/7 Application Performance Monitoring (APM)?

Our APM platform tracks more than 200 KPIs per database including wait stats, blocking, deadlocks, top expensive queries, index health, statistics freshness, log file growth, tempdb pressure, memory grants, parallelism patterns, replication latency, and backup chain integrity. Custom thresholds alert our DBA team, who reviews and acts on issues during business hours before they surface as user-visible symptoms. APM is included in Platinum and Diamond tiers.

We are moving from on-prem SQL Server to Azure. Can you handle the migration?

Yes. We run schema and feature compatibility assessments using Microsoft Data Migration Assistant, plan the right Azure target (SQL Database, Managed Instance, or VM-hosted SQL), remediate compatibility issues, build the cutover runbook, and stay engaged for post-migration tuning. The pace depends on database size, transactional volume, downtime tolerance, and how much application code is database-coupled. Most mid-market migrations land in 8 to 14 weeks.

How do managed database services support Microsoft 365 Copilot and Azure AI Foundry?

Microsoft 365 Copilot, custom Copilot Studio agents, and Azure AI Foundry-built copilots only ground reliably against well-structured, well-indexed source data. We tune the source-of-truth tables, build the retrieval contracts, manage the Azure AI Foundry vector indexes and embedding pipelines, and govern what AI agents can see at the row and column level. The database becomes an explicit grounding layer for AI, not a black box that blocks adoption.

Can you tune existing SQL Server performance issues without rebuilding the database?

Almost always, yes. The vast majority of performance problems we are called in for resolve through index strategy, statistics maintenance, query plan analysis, parameter sniffing fixes, tempdb sizing, and removing the handful of queries that drive most of the wait. Schema rebuilds are reserved for the small subset of cases where the data model itself is the bottleneck. The Discovery & Audit phase produces a written report telling you which it is.

Do you support MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB or just Microsoft SQL Server?

Microsoft SQL Server and Azure SQL are our deepest competency. We also support MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB for clients running mixed environments. We do not support AWS RDS-native services because that platform is outside our current capability set. If your stack is heavily PostgreSQL-only or AWS-centric, we will tell you up front rather than stretch.

What database compliance frameworks do you cover?

HIPAA Security Rule (45 CFR §164.312), PCI DSS 4.0, SOC 2 trust-services criteria (CC6, CC7), GDPR data subject and retention rules, NIST 800-53 control families (AC, AU, CP, IA, SC), ISO 27001 Annex A, GLBA Safeguards Rule, and CMMC 2.0 Level 2 for defense industrial base workloads. We document encryption posture, audit logging, access controls, and change management at the database tier and produce evidence packs for your auditors. For broader cybersecurity context, see our Managed Cybersecurity Services page.

How does this compare to hiring an in-house DBA?

An in-house senior SQL DBA in the U.S. costs roughly $140K to $190K fully loaded, plus a backup person for vacation and after-hours coverage, plus the APM tooling stack. Our Platinum or Diamond tier delivers a senior team and the APM platform for a fraction of that fully loaded cost. The right answer depends on workload size: a single very large mission-critical environment may justify a dedicated in-house DBA; most mid-market environments do not.

Do you build Power BI semantic models on top of the databases you manage?

Yes. We build and maintain Power BI semantic models, dataflows, datasets, direct query optimization patterns, and row-level security policies that run cleanly on top of well-tuned source tables. Because the same team owns the source database performance and the semantic layer, dashboard slowness is debugged once instead of bouncing between vendors.

What is the typical onboarding timeline for managed database services?

Discovery and Audit runs 1 to 3 weeks depending on environment size. Baseline tuning and the first round of remediations land in weeks 3 to 6. APM and database monitoring are typically active by week 6 to 8. Continuous optimization begins in month 3. Smaller environments compress this; multi-instance or regulated environments stretch it. Most mid-market clients are fully onboarded within 8 to 10 weeks.

Do you deliver these services outside New Jersey?

Yes. Managed database services are delivered remotely via secure jump hosts and read-only Azure portal access, available to businesses across the United States. We have deepest engineering capacity in Northern NJ, the NYC metro, Pennsylvania, and South Florida, but no client we serve is constrained by geography for database work. The service is fully remote.
